Pediatric Physical Therapy
It is not uncommon for people to benefit from physical therapy when they are older, but children, even those as young as infants, can benefit from care and attention from a specialist provider. Pediatric physical therapy can help with encouraging growth and proper development, improving mobility limitations, and supporting care during development, optimizing the child’s mobility skills when diagnosed with a genetic or other condition, or when recovering from illness or injury.
Our pediatric physical therapy services can help in a variety of ways. We help children facing a wide range of needs, including:
- Recovery from sports-related injuries
- Recovery from non-sports-related injuries
- Supporting children who may not be hitting developmental milestones
- Improving muscle weakness and imbalances
- Improving coordination and motor planning
- Improving nerve and muscle condition functionality
- Assisting children to maximize mobility skills with abnormalities in muscle tone or nerve function such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida
- Assisting children with genetic disorders such as Down Syndrome to optimize their gross motor potential
- Providing equipment such as gait trainers, wheelchairs, standers, and more for children that need additional support to independently locomote
- Assisting children of all ages to receive supportive braces and orthotics such as AFOs, SMOs, night splints, back braces, and more
Our team provides care for a wide range of medical diagnoses as well. That may include:
- Torticollis
- Plagiocephaly and brachycephaly
- Brachial plexus injury
- Toe walking or frequent trippers and fallers
- Early developmental delays to assist with rolling, sitting, crawling, and walking
- Support for balance, coordination, and strength
- Recovery from orthopedic injury, including fractures, soft tissue, and growth plate issues
Pediatric Occupational Therapy
Pediatric occupational therapy is designed to help children meet their developmental goals through daily occupations. The primary occupations or jobs of infants, toddlers, and young children are playing, learning, and interacting with caregivers and, eventually, their peers.
Occupational therapists address developmental milestones such as (but not limited to): facilitating movement to sit, crawl, or walk independently; learning to pay attention and follow simple instructions; developing the ability to eat, drink, wash, and dress independently; learning to cope with disappointment or failure; reducing extraneous environmental stimuli (sensory processing deficits), such as noise for a child who is easily distracted.
Some of the common medical diagnoses that we see include but are not limited to:
- Attention deficit disorders
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Behavioral problems
- Birth injuries
- Cerebral palsy
- Congenital disabilities
- Developmental delays
- Down syndrome
- Learning problems
- Post-surgery
- Sensory processing disorders
- Spina bifida
- Traumatic brain injuries
Pediatric Speech Therapy
Language is critical for your child to understand others, express themselves, and communicate their needs effectively. Social language development begins at birth and includes skills such as body language, facial expressions, gestures, and eye contact.
Pediatric speech and language therapy focuses on three main domains: speech sound production, language use, and social language. Children benefit from early intervention speech services to decrease their likelihood of falling further behind in age-appropriate milestones.
Some of the common diagnoses we work with include but are not limited to:
- Expressive/Receptive Language
- Articulation/Speech Intelligibility
- Early Intervention/Developmental Delay
- Voice
- Cognitive – Linguistic Skills
- Fluency
- Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
- Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
Feeding Therapy:
- Problem/Picky Eater
- Difficulty Chewing
- Difficulty Swallowing
- Difficulty Bottle Feeding
- Texture Aversion
- G-Tube Weaning
- Difficulty Nursing/Breastfeeding
Equipment and Methods We Use
We use a wide range of services to help support the unique needs of each patient. The key with children is to make the care they receive as engaging and fun as possible. Each session is designed to provide positive reinforcement and care, but in a way that prioritizes play as play is the work of the child.
We may use exercises and equipment designed to help with fine and gross motor skill improvement, such as playing on exercise balls to build up core strength or creating obstacle courses to challenge their balance. We also use pediatric walkers and gait trainers to assist with children who are unable to walk independently and require additional support. Strategies are always customized to meet the individual needs of the child.
We are a patient-centered, therapist-led organization dedicated to improving the health of our midwest communities.
