Mike “Sal” Salerno is from Omaha Nebraska and currently resides in Omaha. Sal received his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in psychology and received his physical therapy degree from the University Nebraska Medical Center in 1987.
Outside of work Sal enjoys cycling, hiking, camping, playing the electric/acoustic guitar and mandolin and watching sports. Mostly he enjoys spending time with his family, he is the father of five children and has two grand kids.
Sal has over 34 years of experience as an orthopedic physical therapist. He has an advanced degree in exercise physiology, and is certified as a Functional Standards for Optimal Aging Expert (FSOAE). He has a special interest in orthopedic rehabilitation for athletic and industrial injuries as well as geriatric fitness. Sal has been in private practice since 2006.

He began his practice in 1987 and became the Senior Therapist who developed and managed the longest running Sports Medicine Program in Southwest Iowa. That program is still running and flourishing today with some of the original Athletic Trainers that Sal hired 30 years ago, as well as dozens of high school contracts. He is a certified instructor in Sportsmetrics ACL Prevention Program from the Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center. Sal has always had a special affinity for the geriatric patients. Sal is also currently the only therapist in the state of Nebraska that is certified to perform the Adult Functional Independence Test (AFIT) and earned his certificate as a Functional Standards for Optimal Aging Expert.

His philosophy on patient care is exercise based with emphasis on educating the patient for long-term success and management. “Making a positive impact on someone’s life and functional abilities is my primary goal”.

Why did you become a therapist?

My participation in numerous sports and sustaining a number of injuries peaked my interest in rehabilitation. My first contact with a physical therapist was in my freshman year of college when I sustained a basketball injury. I was pre-med in college but decided physical therapy offered me the opportunity to have more “hands-on” time with patents and build deeper and richer relationships with them.
