Our Services
We offer a wide range of therapy services to help your child develop the skills they need to function at their peak level of ability.
Developmental Screenings
Newborns with feeding challenges, children unable to harness their impulses, and delays from complex medical problems are just a few examples of symptoms that hold children back from developing to their full abilities.
At Rock Valley, we understand how difficult it is as a parent to see your child struggle to function in everyday life. So, we offer developmental screenings without requiring a physician referral to pinpoint the issues and create a treatment plan unique to your child.
Our current campaign, “Birth to Five – Watch Me Thrive!” is working to help the infants and children in our community meet their goals and achieve their milestones as early as possible. Any child who experiences trouble functioning in his or her daily life will benefit from a no-cost consultation. We offer free developmental screening by all three disciplines (physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy) without requiring a physician referral.
Children can face many challenges, including, but not limited to, delays in movement, behavioral challenges, delays in speech and language skills, and picky eating. For children with complex medical needs, we coordinate adaptive equipment, bracing, and other mobility device provisions with our local assistive technology practitioners and orthotists.
Children receiving services from Iowa’s Area Education Agencies (AEA) may still qualify for outpatient therapy. We work with the AEA to meet the developmental and other goals of your child. In fact, children who receive both services often have a better chance at obtaining ideal outcomes with more opportunities to work on the skills challenging them.
Pediatric Physical Therapy
Our motto in pediatric therapy is “The Earlier, The Better!” because we believe in addressing developmental delays as soon as possible. We find that if delays are addressed as quickly as they are identified, it prevents your child from falling behind on their next set of milestones.
Some of the diagnoses we treat in pediatric physical therapy include but are not limited to:
- Amputations
- Brachial plexus injury
- Cerebral palsy
- Concussion
- Constipation and other pelvic floor dysfunction/core weakness
- Developmental delays associated with autism spectrum disorders
- Diastasis recti
- Down syndrome
- Early developmental delays (in rolling, crawling, walking, etc.)
- Ehlers-Danlos syndrome ( and other hypermobility disorders)
- Gait abnormalities (toe walking, frequent tripping/falling, walking with toes in or out)
- General developmental delays (including balance, coordination, and strength)
- Genetic disorders
- Hydrocephalus
- Hypotonia (“floppy baby syndrome”)
- In utero strokes and other causes of hemiplegia
- Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
- Muscular dystrophy
- Orthopedics (including fractures, soft tissues, sports-related, growth plate issues)
- Poor posture
- Scoliosis
- Spina bifida
- Spinal cord injury
- Torticollis
- Traumatic brain injury
Pediatric physical therapy helps your child improve gross motor skills, strength, joint range of motion, etc. For help with fine motor skills, visual perception, cognitive thinking, and sensory processing, your therapist may also incorporate occupational therapy.
Pediatric Occupational Therapy
Pediatric occupational therapy helps your child succeed by improving their motor, cognitive, sensory processing, communication, and play skills, according to the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
Pediatric occupational therapy is designed to help children meet their developmental goals through daily occupations. The primary occupations or jobs of infants, toddlers, and young children are playing, learning, and interacting with caregivers and, eventually, their peers.
Occupational therapists address developmental milestones such as (but not limited to): facilitating movement to sit, crawl, or walk independently; learning to pay attention and follow simple instructions; developing the ability to eat, drink, wash, and dress independently; learning to cope with disappointment or failure; reducing extraneous environmental stimuli (sensory processing deficits), such as noise for a child who is easily distracted.
Occupation therapy also helps your child with turn-taking skills, sharing and playing with peers; using toys and materials in both traditional and creative ways; and participating in age-appropriate daily routines
Some of the common medical diagnoses that we see include but are not limited to:
- Attention deficit disorders
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Behavioral problems
- Birth injuries
- Cerebral palsy
- Congenital disabilities
- Developmental delays
- Down syndrome
- Learning problems
- Post-surgery
- Sensory processing disorders
- Spina bifida
- Traumatic brain injuries
Pediatric Speech Therapy
Language is critical for your child to understand others, express themselves, and communicate their needs effectively. Social language development begins at birth and includes skills such as body language, facial expressions, gestures, and eye contact.
Pediatric speech and language therapy focuses on three main domains: speech sound production, language use, and social language. Children benefit from early intervention speech services to decrease their likelihood of falling further behind in age-appropriate milestones.
Some of the common diagnoses we work with include but are not limited to:
- Articulation disorders: Difficulty producing certain speech sounds (i.e., r, th, f, s, etc.)
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Childhood apraxia of speech: Difficulty motor planning for oral movement and speech
- Expressive language delays: Minimal use of words
- Mixed receptive-expressive language delay: Difficulty with both use of words and understanding of others language
- Phonological disorders: Difficulty producing speech sounds characterized by decreased intelligibility, unusual articulation errors, and common patterns of speech errors
- Receptive language delays: Difficulty understanding words/verbal directions of others
